Holgate Windmill in York

The Feoffees of St Michael’s Spurriergate have been supporting York and its communities for centuries. We make grants to charitable organisations working for the benefit of people in York and to Church of England churches in the city. If you think your project might be eligible, we encourage you to get in touch or read on to find out more.

What we fund

We make grants for two purposes:

General charitable purposes — supporting organisations working for the benefit of the inhabitants of York.

Church of England churches in York — contributing to the upkeep and maintenance of CoE churches within our area.

Grants are usually between £250 and £10,000. We do not make grants to individuals.

How to apply

We have two application forms depending on the type of grant you are seeking:

Please use the correct form for your application — we are unable to accept applications in any other format. If you have any difficulty with the forms, please contact us and we will be glad to help.

Your application should make a clear case for what you are doing and why, in plain, concise language. Each section of the form should not exceed 250 words.

Along with your completed form, please include:

  1. Your latest annual report and accounts. If your organisation is newly established, please submit a bank statement and budget instead.
  2. Up to three additional supporting documents or images if these are relevant to your application.

Please note that we cannot consider your application without your accounts or financial statements being provided.

If your application is successful, you will be required to submit a short end-of-project report covering activities, impact, and a simple breakdown of how the grant was spent.

Please also note that we usually only consider further grant requests from the same organisation after a gap of two years.

When we meet

The Feoffees meet four times a year, usually in March, June, September and December, to consider grant applications. Applications should reach us before the middle of the preceding month. Applications received after this point will be considered at the following meeting.

Are you eligible?

Before applying, please check that your organisation falls within our eligible area.

We fund work benefiting the City of York (as defined by the administrative boundaries as at 31 March 1974), together with additional areas lying within the York Outer Ring Road — the A64 to the south and east, and the A1237 to the north and west. This map gives a general guide.

If you are unsure whether your organisation is within the eligible area, please contact the Clerk before applying.
