Grants

Grants are made for general charitable purposes for the benefit of the inhabitants of York and also for the upkeep and maintenance of Church of England churches in York, based on its pre-1974 boundaries.

Sums awarded have ranged from £250 to £100,000. In the last ten years, over one million pounds has been given in grants to a great variety of projects.

Grants are not made to individuals.

Before making an application please ensure that your organisation lies within the historic boundaries of York, as shown on this map.

In exceptional circumstances, a grant may be awarded to an organisation based close to but outside this area, if it can be clearly demonstrated that it is of direct benefit to people living within the area.

 

Making an application

The Feoffees usually meet four times a year in March, June, September and December to consider grant applications. Applications should be made before the middle of the previous month. Late applications will be deferred to the next meeting.

Applications for Church of England churches can be made in writing to the Clerk and should include:

  • Details of the project.
  • Estimated costs and quotes, along with the size of grant requested.
  • What outcomes the project or capital works will achieve and who it will benefit.
  • A note of any funding sought or promised from elsewhere as well as internal resources.

Applications for General Charitable Purposes:

To apply for a grant for General Charitable Purposes we ask that you complete our Application Form. An editable Word-version of the form can be downloaded here. Please note that we are not able to accept applications that are not in this format. If you experience any difficulties with the form, please contact us for assistance.

All applications need to include:

  1. Your latest annual accounts (or a budget/bank statement for very new organisations that do not yet have a full set of accounts).
  2. Confirmation that in the event of over-funding any grant made by the Feoffees will be refunded to them in full or in an appropriate proportion.
  3. Confirmation that a subsequent Evaluation Report on the outcomes of your project and how the grant has benefitted the recipient will be provided to the Feoffees.
